You have been tattooed by a trained professional using the utmost sterilization techniques, and the finest tattooing pigments available. Now the rest is up to you. By following these simple aftercare instructions your tattoo will heal properly, and be a beautiful work of art for the rest of your life.
1) Leave the bandage on for a minimum of 4 hours, but no longer than12 hours. DO NOT remove the bandage until you are ready to wash the tattoo.
2) Immediately upon removal of bandage, wash the tattoo using an antibacterial soap such as Dial (liquid or bar). Using lukewarm water and your fingers (NO WASHCLOTH), wash the tattoo 4-5 times to remove any of the ointment and bodily fluids. The tattoo will feel slimy at first, continue washing until no longer slimy feeling. Wash your tattoo 4-5 times daily for the entire healing process.
3) Pat the tattoo dry with a clean soft towel.
4) Always allow your tattoo to air dry for an additional 15 minutes before applying any ointment.
5) Using your fingertips, apply a SUPERTHIN layer of ointment. A&D ointment, Aquaphor, or other specialty tattoo ointments (Tattoo Goo, After Inked, etc) are all acceptable choices to use on your tattoo. DO NOT USE OINTMENTS LIKE NEOSPORIN. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ONLY USE ENOUGH OINTMENT TO KEEP THE TATTOO MOIST NOT GREASY! Reapply as needed to keep the skin from drying out.
6) You may experience oozing from the tattoo for the first few days. Do not be alarmed; this is most likely just your body's plasma along with some excess ink. If this is the case just wash your tattoo as described above and reapply ointment.
7) Your tattoo will begin to peel in 2-4 days. DO NOT PICK IT. Let the peeling fall off naturally.
8) Do not go swimming, into a sauna, or a hot tub for at least two weeks. Showering is completely fine (and recommended!), but avoid baths if they will result in your tattoo being submerged.
9) Avoid direct sunlight, this includes tanning booths, for at least 2 weeks.
10) If at all possible try to keep your clothing off your new tattoo for at least 2 weeks.
11) Do not shave over your new tattoo for at least 2 weeks.
12) Use your ointment of choice for three days following receiving your tattoo. After 3 days, stop using ointment and begin using UNSCENTED lotion for 1 additional week.
